Points of Presence (POPs)

POPs are the central elements that mediate communication between CFP and your target and destination servers. Creating POPs is the first step in configuring Cloud FastPath to transfer your data. To run a job you will typically need at least two POPs: one for the data source and one for the data target. For additional information on what POPs do, see How Cloud FastPath Works. The information below is about how to actually install, edit or delete a POP.

About Pool POPs

Most cloud POPs are pool POPs, which suspend when not in use, and then wake up when you log into your account. Suspended POPs are grey, and while they activate, they blink blue and grey. When they turn blue, they are fully connected and ready to use. The activation process typically takes a minute or less, but sometimes can take up to 10 minutes.

Creating a New POP

1: NOTE:  If you are creating a Windows POP (to move data directly from or to a Windows computer), select the Download App button and click here for further instructions on deploying and using it. For all other POP types, select the Deploy POP button from the dashboard and follow the instructions below.

3: Enter a name for your POP in the POP Name field.

4: Select the service you will be using from the POP Type list.  Cloud FastPath Managed (Pool) POPs will be generated automatically and do not require you to enter any credentials.  However, you are limited to generating the number of POPs you have purchased from Tervela.  Other POPs will guide you through an installation wizard where you enter your own credentials for the cloud provider, such as Amazon, where the POP is installed. If you decide to use your own credentials, you are subject to all charges incurred by the cloud provider for installing and running data through the POP.

5: Select the OK button.  For Cloud FastPath Managed POPs, you will return to the dashboard while your POP installs.  For POPs that use your personal credentials, you will launch an instruction wizard for installing your specific type of POP. Installation varies slightly from vendor to vendor but the general procedure is:

  • If you are installing a cloud-based POP such as Amazon, you will need to install credentials such as a Key Pair or Username/Password.
  • All POPs contain CFP adapters for the platforms where the POP resides. These adapters allow CFP to read and write data to the specific format expected for the respective sources and targets.

6: POPs that are connected and fully operational are blue.  POPs that are not connected are orange; POPs that are suspended are grey.  POP installation may take a few minutes, and POPs will be orange until installation completes.

Editing or Deleting a POP

1: Go to the CFP Dashboard. Select the POP that you want to edit by clicking on it in the Points of Presence pane, and then selecting the View button from the popover balloon.

2: The POP modal window displays. At the bottom of the POP Metrics pane, you will see a Delete POP button:

3: The Delete POP button deletes your POP. Note that you cannot delete a POP that has any systems connected to it.  The flowchart for deleting a POP is:

  1. You must delete all jobs that use a system (or at least delete the system from the job) before you can delete the system itself.  The Delete button will only display for the system when it is no longer used by any jobs.  The jobs that use systems connected to the POP are listed in the upper left corner of the screen. You can click on the job name and to bring up a metrics balloon that will enable you to configure or delete the job.
  2. You must delete all systems from a POP before you can delete the POP. The Delete button will only display for the POP when all its systems have been deleted.  The systems for the current POP are displayed as green squares at the bottom of the modal window.
