Scenario: Warn User on Permission Conflicts

What It Is

With this option, the priority is to maintain the directory structure and permissions, even if that means not all data is moved. For any item that needs more restrictive permissions than that item’s parent, the item is not created on the target system at all.

When To Choose It

Choose this option when you are primarily concerned about security and when you will not have the ability to manipulate permissions or folder structures on the target before end users access the data.

Example

Source Structure

On the source, we have a directory structure that is shared as follows:

Engineering: shared with “Engineering”, “Product Management”

  • Project Alpha: shared with “Engineering”, “Product Management”
  • Project Beta: shared with “Engineering”, “Bob Johnson”

Marketing: shared with “Marketing”

  • User Studies: shared with “Marketing”, “Designers”
  • Personas: shared with “Designers”, half of the marketing users
  • Digital and PPC: shared with some of the marketing users, “Digital Agency”

Target Structure

On the target, you want the following directory structure shared as follows:

Engineering: shared with “Engineering”, “Product Management”

  • Project Alpha: shared with “Engineering”, “Product Management”

Marketing: shared with “Marketing”

  • User Studies: shared with “Marketing”, “Designers”

What Changed

In the move from source to target, the following things changed:

  • Project Beta: was not moved because it has fewer permissions than the parent folder (Engineering)
  • Personas: was not moved because it has fewer permissions than the parent folder (Marketing)
  • Digital and PPC: was not moved because it has fewer permissions than the parent folder (Marketing)
