So you’ve been thinking about migration, but you’re still not entirely sure if it’s what you want to do.
That’s totally understandable!
Migration is a big undertaking and a bit of trepidation makes sense for businesses that are starting to look into the possibility. Still, many of the common objections that come to mind, especially with regards to using a more complex migration solution, are not nearly as large of an issue as organizations tend to think.
Don’t believe us? Let’s dive into a few of the most common refrains we hear from companies that aren’t sure they’re ready to take the leap, and why you should trust in your project, and set them aside.
#1 I’m Worried My Permissions Will Get Screwed Up.
Permissions can often be the most complicated part of cloud migration. Permission models can be vastly different between different cloud platforms and even more so when migrating from on-premises storage. Your permissions, of course, dictate whether members of a team can access documents crucial to an ongoing project, or whether personally identifiable information (PII) is stored compliantly. When businesses considering migration express concern about permissions, they’re correct to focus on this issue. However, just because they’ve heard horror stories other migration tools or DIY solutions jumbling essential permission models, doesn’t mean there’s no hope.
With Cloud FastPath, IT teams are given a suite of tools and options to help them effectively map permissions. Whether migrating from legacy storage to the cloud or from one cloud provider to another, Cloud FastPath ensures that all users, groups, permissions, roles, and access rights are maintained.
With Cloud FastPath Analytics, you will have the ability to carefully plan a migration and precisely map the permissions that govern security of sensitive files and the accessibility of essential folders. With Cloud FastPath, permission mapping is straightforward yet flexible, and businesses looking to migrate needn’t worry that their content will be jumbled in the process.
Your permissions are in good hands!
#2 The Process is Too Expensive!
For many businesses, cloud migration can often seem like an expensive endeavor for a number of reasons. Firstly, you might worry about the cost of a migration tool (which often encourages people to make the mistake of relying on free tools). On top of this, organizations might be concerned about changeover costs: loss of productivity during the migration process, the time it will take to train users in the new platform, etc. Much like concerns about permission mapping, these anxieties aren’t illegitimate, but they’re often overblown. With the proper migration tool and careful planning, even a long ongoing migration needn’t compromise productivity, and with the care of our partners, onboarding and training is a cinch.
When it comes to cost, an organized and successful migration leads to immediate ROI via decommissioning systems, increasing collaboration, and obtaining more favorable licensing.
And this doesn’t even begin to touch on the massive cost of sticking with your servers.
The cost of on-premises storage is more than just buying drives. Between maintenance, backup systems, software, hardware, cooling, and more, your organization or your customer is unnecessarily paying too much for feature-lacking technology. In addition to the hard-dollar savings from turning off file servers or SharePoint on-premises, there are savings to be had just from the amount of time saved conducting daily maintenance and management of these systems.
Cloud collaboration platforms vastly increase productivity. While outdated legacy storage limits functionality and access to content, cloud collaboration solutions offer teams new and expedient ways to share, communicate, and monitor the workflow of major endeavors. While businesses that depend on on-premises servers often see users having to juggle multiple applications and tools to complete any given task, cloud collaboration platforms centralize and expand the options that users have. Your tool kit is bigger, but you don’t have to worry about wasting time digging around for the right wrench.
Certainly, cloud migration can take some time, but with the proper tool that process needn’t put a dent in productivity; and the end result is a major expansion of what users can get done.
#3 It Takes Forever!
Related to concerns about cost are those about the time it will take for a migration to be completed. Luckily, the solutions to these concerns are also very similar.
It’s true that enterprise-wide cloud migration can take a while. In fact, it’s common that some businesses actually underestimate the time commitment. As such, there’s no use denying that, yes, these projects do take time.
Obviously, the length of any migration is, in part, dictated by the amount of data and number of users that must be migrated. However, it’s also affected by factors such as ongoing projects, mergers, acquisitions, and other general time constraints on the organization looking to migrate. If all of this sounds ominous, it needn’t. The Cloud FastPath migration solution was designed with these concerns and constraints in mind.
As previously mentioned, Cloud FastPath Analytics and the Project Center feature allow organizations to carefully plan their migration around their specific constraints.
Even if a migration has to take place over a couple of months, you can prescribe which users, departments, and teams are migrated when, so that–no matter the length of the migration–there’s minimal to no disruption to ongoing company functions. Length of a migration might also be concerning to an enterprise because it implies that IT will be tied up for quite some time.
That’s not the case with Cloud FastPath. Our decisive and concise reporting and analytics functions combined with the wealth of planning features available means that IT isn’t constantly slaving over the migration process. They receive regular updates, and dictate the shape and duration of the migration at the beginning, but once the process is up and running they aren’t chained to that one specific task. Migration issues and complications (such as a user’s data not being migrated or the need to add an extra wave for ‘stragglers’) are quickly reported so that they can be addressed efficiently without derailing other IT projects or the work that those users are engaged in.
Certainly, time can be of the essence for many businesses. Understanding that, Cloud FastPath makes sure that migration is done on your schedule.
#4 Why Pay For This At All? There Are Free Tools!
This is one of the most common objections, and it’s not a surprising one. You’re certainly right that there are free tools on the market. What you might not understand is that those tools are bound to make their migration infinitely more complicated, and infinitely less successful. In short, there’s a reason they’re free.
Looking back at the concern many businesses have about permission mapping, it’s important that IT teams understand the complexity of that element of migration.
With this in mind, CFP crafted a wholly unique set of mapping options to address it.
When using a free tool, your permissions are more likely to map incorrectly or not at all, and the wrong files are more likely to end up in the wrong hands. FTP and other free tools offer rickety, slow migrations without the support for metadata. They make sensitive data more vulnerable, and they’re prone to breaking down and seemingly cancelling out whatever was previously migrated.
On top of all of this, most of these free tools are not designed to migrate a large amount of content. Some will have explicit restrictions, others will just buckle under the weight with no warning.
#5 We Just Don’t Have the Resources.
As we’ve worked with various organizations, it’s become clear that cloud migration requires a great deal of attention, and–for smaller organizations–this can be a struggle. That’s why, over the years, CFP has sought out highly qualified partners and MSPs with whom to work.
These specialized businesses are trained in CFP, and are experts at managing your migration with you feel as though you don’t have the manpower. Highly qualified, and undeniably experienced, CFP’s stable of partners helps pair organizations that need a helping hand, accomplish their migration projects, no sweat!
Migration Isn’t As Scary as You Think
All of the anxieties and objections that engulf organizations prior to enterprise level migration are completely natural. After all, the process represents a major change that will fundamentally affect all sectors of a business, and every single user within it.
Still, it’s important to put these concerns in perspective, to understand how the right tools can make migration more than manageable, how the benefits of migration easily outweigh the hypothetical pitfalls.
At Cloud FastPath, our goal is to guide enterprises into the next stage of their development, to help them cultivate their futures and revolutionize how they work. We make sure that our clients are secure and supported throughout the whole journey, and that the promised benefits reveal themselves as anything but snake oil.
Sure, cloud migration can be a little scary. But, with Cloud FastPath, you’re in good hands.
